Two Collections That Grew Up Together.

Hot Wheels launched in 1968. The people who collected the cars — who kept them in their original packaging, who traded them at school, who lined them up on window ledges — were the same people who, twenty-five years later, were standing in line for BAPE drops in Harajuku and on Canal Street. The cultural distance between a die-cast miniature car and a limited-edition Japanese streetwear piece is not as large as it appears. Both objects operated on the same logic: small production runs, high desirability, condition-dependent value, the particular satisfaction of acquiring the one you wanted before someone else did.

This graphic makes the overlap explicit. The Ape Head silhouette — large format, centre chest — is filled entirely with Hot Wheels and BAPE collaboration badges and stickers: the HW flame logo, the chequered race flag, miniature car profiles, the "Hot Wheels × A Bathing Ape" co-branded medallion, Ape Head icons in Hot Wheels livery. The interior is a collector's surface — the kind of thing you find on the inside lid of a storage case that has been in service for thirty years. Every badge is a piece of both archives compressed into one silhouette.

White base renders the interior in warm red-brown tones — the vintage palette of early Hot Wheels packaging, the colour of the original blister cards and the orange track. Nostalgic, immediate, the specific warmth of objects that have been handled many times. Black base renders the same interior in military olive green, which changes the register entirely: the same archive of badges reads as tactical, as collected with intention rather than with affection. Both versions are correct. Collectors have always known that context changes value.
