The Ape Has Been Potted.

Someone took the Ape Head — the same mark that has appeared on garments worn by some of the most significant figures in contemporary music, fashion, and sport for three decades — and turned it into a topiary. The head has been shaped into a perfect sphere by a gardener, covered entirely in close-cropped grass, planted in a small blue ceramic pot, and decorated with a scattering of white daisies. The face is still there. If you look through the greenery, you can see the eyes and the outline of the expression looking out from inside the hedge. The ape is in there. It has simply been landscaped.

The joke is that this is still, unmistakably, a BAPE garment. The College Logo arc — "A Bathing" over the top, "Ape" below, the proportions exactly as they have always been — frames the topiary in the same way it would frame a standard Ape Head. The typography is in the same grass-green as the topiary itself, so the whole composition exists in a single colour world: green on white, or the same green rendered fluorescent against black. BAPE has always understood that its visual language is strong enough to survive being placed in almost any context without losing legibility. The gardening context is a test of that thesis, and the thesis holds.

White base keeps the grass-green graphic botanical and clean — springtime, open, the kind of image you might find on a plant nursery hoarding if plant nurseries had ever collaborated with Harajuku streetwear. Black base pushes the same green into something more electric, almost neon, the daisies picking up a cooler brightness against the dark ground. Both work. They are just different seasons.
