Ten Years. One Rule. Written in a Circle.

"Apes Don't Hit Apes" — Enzan wa Enzan wo Utanai — is one of BAPE's foundational statements: a simple code of conduct turned into a brand philosophy, the idea that the community built around a brand should extend genuine solidarity to its own members. By the time BAPE reached its tenth anniversary in 2003, the phrase had accumulated a decade of meaning. It was no longer just a slogan. It was a record of the people who had been part of the brand since the beginning, when the queue outside the Ura-Harajuku store was the community itself, before the internet made that community global.

The 10th Anniversary pieces marked a moment when BAPE began to look inward at its own history rather than outward at the next reference. The visual language shifted: less military surplus, more Japanese aesthetics. The calligraphy on this piece is written in a brush script with visible inkwork — wet strokes and dry edges, the pressure variations of a hand holding an actual brush — arranged in a complete circle around the Ape Head at the centre. The phrase repeats continuously around the ring, no beginning and no end, the rule as an unbroken loop. The format references o-mamori, the Japanese protective charm: a sacred phrase written around a central image, worn as a talisman. BAPE's version replaces the shrine deity with the Ape Head and the sacred text with a community code. The form is traditional. The content is entirely the brand.

Two Colourways — Two Visual Philosophies

  • White: white base; ABC Forest Camo Ape Head in deep green, mid green, and sage; calligraphy ring in dark ink; the colour of the camo contrasts with the monochrome brushwork; green and black against white — the graphic contains both the brand's camo language and its calligraphic language simultaneously
  • Black: black base; Ape Head filled with a fully desaturated ink-wash camo — deep grey, mid grey, pale grey, off-white — the camo rendered in the same tonal language as the calligraphy ring; the entire graphic is a single ink register, as if the piece were painted rather than printed; the most internally coherent of the two, and the most explicitly Japanese in its visual reference
