Cherry blossom in Japan lasts roughly two weeks. BAPE's 2022SS Cherry Blossom Ape Head Tee arrived as a seasonal limited release and did not return. The graphic is a single composition: a cherry blossom tree, rendered with botanical accuracy in the branch and trunk structure, whose canopy — the mass of blossoms at full bloom — forms the exact silhouette of the Ape Head. The face detail (eyes, nose, expression) is present within the flower mass but subordinate to it, emerging only when you look for it. Petals fall from the canopy and collect at the base of the trunk. "*A BATHING APE*" in spaced lettering below. On White: the pink-violet blossom tones sit at mid-saturation against the clean base; the overall register is soft and graphic in equal measure; the tree reads from distance before the Ape Head does. On Black: the identical graphic shifts register completely; the pink blossoms advance hard against the dark ground; the petals at the base appear to have their own luminosity; the drama of full-bloom sakura against night reads as the more striking of the two versions, and the Ape Head within the canopy becomes more immediately legible.
