BAPE Original Woodland Camo Shark Full-Zip Hoodie

The Original Camo. The Original Shark. The Cut That Started It.

Before the ABC Camo, before the Color Camo, before the pattern became the brand, there was the green Woodland Camo -- the military-derived camouflage that BAPE used in the early 1990s when the label first opened, built on the same visual logic as the US Army M81 Woodland but adjusted in scale and tone. Olive, dark brown, khaki, black: the four tones of original military concealment, placed on a Shark Hoodie for the first time in the early 2000s. That pairing -- Woodland Camo on the shark head, solid body below -- is what this hoodie continues.

The construction is a split: the hood is entirely covered in the green Woodland Camo, which forms the skin of the shark face; the body of the hoodie is solid, either black or grey, depending on the colourway chosen. The division between the two falls at the shoulder line, a clean horizontal cut where the camouflage ends and the plain fleece begins. The shark face sits on the camo: white serrated teeth in two rows, red eyes, black jaw outline. Two embroidered badge letters -- "G" on a navy circle, "M" in amber -- sit on the crown of the hood above the shark's head, positioned where a helmet would be on a soldier, or a logo on a cap. The combination of military pattern, cartoon predator face, and varsity-style lettered badges is the register this piece operates in: not any one of these things in isolation, but all three together.

The Black colourway creates the sharpest opposition between the warm olive tones of the camo and the cold flat black of the body. The shoulder seam reads as a hard boundary. The Gray colourway is a closer match in temperature -- military greens and neutral grey share enough tonal common ground that the split reads less as contrast and more as transition, with the fabric change (camo print fleece on the hood, plain loop on the body) becoming the primary distinction between the two zones.
