BAPE Tartan Plaid Ape Head T-Shirt

The Ape Head in Plaid. The Statement Below.

The Ape Head on this T-shirt does not use its standard solid fill or ABC Camo. Instead, the face is filled with a tartan plaid: a warm-toned grid built from a khaki-beige ground, black primary grid lines running both horizontally and vertically, and fine red accent lines crossing through. The resulting pattern belongs to the same visual family as classic British tartan -- the grid structure, the colour logic, the layering of line weights -- applied to the shape of the Ape Head with the facial features (brows, eyes, nose) printed in solid black over the pattern. Below the head, a circled R trademark symbol sits to the right, and the line "BY BATHING APE" runs in bold sans-serif capitals directly beneath. Not "A Bathing Ape" -- "By Bathing Ape". The phrasing shifts the read: less a brand name, more a credit line.

The tartan choice puts two very different sartorial traditions into the same image. Tartan is institutional, associated with heritage, clan identity, restraint -- it does not typically appear on streetwear graphics. The Ape Head is the opposite: a cartoon face from Japanese street culture, built on irreverence and recognisability. The plaid fill does not smooth this tension. It holds both things in place simultaneously, which is what makes the graphic work at a second look when the pattern resolves into something more considered than it first appears.

The two colourways handle the plaid differently. On black, the warm khaki and red tones of the tartan push forward against the dark ground -- the Ape Head becomes the warmest and brightest element on the shirt, and "BY BATHING APE" reads in white below. On white, the same plaid sits against a lighter ground; the khaki tones integrate more gently, the fine grid structure of the pattern becomes more visible at close range, and "BY BATHING APE" reads in black. Back is clean on both.
